Main specifications of carbideproducts:
1. Hardness: Normally, HRA and HV are used to indicate thehardness, but HRA is more commonly used. For WC-Co carbides, thehardness increases relatively as the cobalt content decreases andWC grain size reduces.
2. Strength:Cemented carbide is in the categoryof brittle materials. Its strength is normally evaluated by bendingstrength, compressive strength and fracture toughness, etc. and thesimplest and most commonly used method is check its bendingstrength. In China, bending strength is obtained via 3-pointbending test according to GB/T 3851 standard. Bending strengthnormally increases as the increase of the cobalt content, but afterthe cobalt content exceeds 15%, bending strength starts todecrease.
3. Density:Density is a reflection of thegrade composition, and is an important factor to be controlled inproduction process. Redundant of insufficient carbon content canall be reflected by density. Carbide density decreases as thecobalt content increases, but it has nothing to do with WC grainsizes.
4. Magnetism:Cobalt is magnetic material and itsrule of magnetization complies with magnetization curve offerromagnetic materials. Therefore, tungsten carbide possessesmagnetism. Magnetic property can reflect structural andcompositional of carbide and so, it is also an important factor tobe controlled in production process.
5. Porosity:Porosity indicates there are microbores in carbide''s microstructure of smooth surface. Micro boresin carbide product is very detrimental to its strength, and thepores are the origin of carbide destruction. The most effective wayto eliminate and inhibit pores in carbide is to use sinter-HIP orHIP (hot iso-static press) Process.
